The artist

A voice with
its own world.

Christie Walker is a vocalist with one foot in the golden age of sophisticated pop and the other firmly in the present. Elegant, assured and blessed with a voice that can move effortlessly from intimacy to drama, she makes music where classic pop, orchestral soul, jazz and the glamour of the great female vocalists meet contemporary production.

Her debut album, Ask Me Yourself, introduces an artist with a strong sense of identity. These are songs about attraction, independence, disappointment, experience and knowing exactly what you want — delivered by a woman who has no intention of waiting for somebody else to tell her how she should feel.

Christie's voice is central to that character. Rich and expressive, it can be conversational and intimate before opening into something considerably more powerful. She understands that a great vocal performance does not have to demonstrate everything it can do at once; sometimes a phrase delivered quietly can say considerably more than a spectacular final note.

Musically, her world draws inspiration from the beautifully arranged records of the 1960s and 1970s without attempting to recreate them. Piano, strings, brass, guitar, bass and live percussion sit alongside modern production, creating records with the scale and sophistication of another era but the clarity and confidence of contemporary pop.

Harmony also plays an important part in the Christie Walker sound. On Ask Me Yourself, vocal group The Four Drops appear across four tracks, adding another layer of classic pop character to the record. Their harmonies complement Christie rather than simply sitting behind her, recalling the excitement of records where lead singer, backing voices and musicians all felt like part of the same performance.

Visually, Christie embraces glamour without becoming a pastiche. The sculpted dark hair, dramatic eyes, immaculate tailoring and evening gowns may carry echoes of another age, but her attitude makes the image contemporary. Whether standing beneath stage lights, dressed sharply in a modern interior or performing with a live band, she looks less like somebody playing a character from the past than an artist who has decided that glamour never needed to disappear in the first place.

That distinction runs throughout Ask Me Yourself. Christie Walker isn't interested in nostalgia for nostalgia's sake. She takes the confidence, musicianship, strong melodies and sense of occasion associated with classic records and asks what they might sound like if an artist made them now.

Sophisticated but never distant, dramatic without becoming theatrical and glamorous without losing the human being at its centre, Christie Walker makes grown-up pop music with personality.
